Shipping: The forgotten emitter
The COP21 agreement missed the mark on shipping. The risks of delaying accountability from the shipping sector for 3% of global emissions are urgent: noxious chemicals and pollutants are released in concentrated quantities when ships are at port, revving their engines to move in and out. With estimates indicating that emissions from shipping are on the rise - up to 14% by 2050 - the International Maritime Organization has reponded by urgently calling upon shipbuilders ensure that all new ships are 30% more efficient by 2025.
