Jobless rate remains steady

The OECD-area unemployment rate held steady at 6.5% in August, unchanged from June and July and 0.3 percentage points lower than a year earlier. The jobless rate rose to 7.1% in Canada from 6.8% in July, 4.1% in the United States (4.0%), 8.6% in Belgium (8.5%), 14.5% in Spain (14.2%) and 5.9% in Sweden (9.6). But this was offset by a fall in the unemployment rate to 4.6% in Japan from 4.7% in July, 4.8% in Denmark (4.9%), 9.4% in Finland (9.5%), 4.4% in Ireland (4.5%) and 3.8% in Portugal (3.9%). The unemployment rate remained stable at 3.2% in Austria, 9.6% in France and 8.3% in Germany.
